What are the Brother Chickens?

The Chicken Brothers are a chain of fast food restaurants located in the southeast of the United States and specialized in fried chicken, according to the universe of the television series breaking bad. They were founded by Gustavo Fring and his friend, Max Arciniega.

Los Pollos Hermanos was subsidized by the German conglomerate Madrigal Electromotive, which had a significant amount of shares in the restaurants. This restaurant had two main purposes: to serve as a front for Fring’s real business (the production and distribution of drugs) and to allow the money obtained to be laundered.

In the series, if Fring wanted to meet one of his associates, either at the restaurant or in some other place related to it, he would send a message with the word «Chickens».

Background

Gus Fring was the owner of the restaurants located in the southeast of the United States, specifically in Albuquerque and part of Nevada. The employees, those not linked to the drug business, had to serve their customers with the message: «Los Pollos Hermanos, where something delicious is always cooking.»

However, the conception of the restaurants was created in order to be a cover for the main business: the manufacture of methamphetamine.

It was then that the alliance between Gus and his friend Max Arciniega, the “brothers” of Pollos Hermanos, was established. Fring would take care of business and Max, thanks to his training in chemistry, would manufacture the drug.

From there, the events can be summarized as follows (these occurred in the episode «Brothers»):

Fring and Arciniega founded the restaurants in Mexico under the name of “Los Pollos”.
Arciniega manufactured the recipe for the preparation of methamphetamine; thus it could distribute the drug among different potential clients.
In view of the success of drug trafficking, the leader of the Mexican drug cartel, Don Eladio, invited them to his mansion.
Fring tried to convince Don Eladio to include methamphetamine in the business. However, the leader saw the appearance of the drug as a threat, so he killed Arciniega in front of Gus.
Gus later moved to the United States and founded the Max Arciniega Scholarship, in order to find new talent for manufacturing methamphetamine.
Years later, and thanks to the consolidation of the business, Gus returned to meet Don Eladio and forget the past. However, both he and his associates were killed by a bottle of poisoned tequila that Gus had concocted.

Chicken Brothers and Walter White

During the third season, Walter begins to work for Gus in what would be «the farm» or chicken farm, place where they would manufacture the drug. At this point, blue meth was already well known and popular with users.

It should be noted that the transfer of the drug, after packaging it, was done through the mixtures to fry the fried chicken; thus the distribution was guaranteed.

The plot thickened further in season four, as the drug division managed to uncover an important lead at the crime scene of Gale Boettcher, a Max Arciniega fellowship chemist who briefly worked as Walter’s assistant. .

At Gale’s apartment, Hank discovers a Los Pollos Hermanos napkin, thus inferring the connection between Gale (who was a vegan) and Gus. Other members of the cartel know that Walter is working with Gus, so they begin to sabotage the distribution of the drug.

Little by little, Hank’s investigation closes in on Gus’ intention to get rid of the police, despite having an image of a model citizen. It is in the fifth season when the restaurant Los Pollos Hermanos falls out of favor and is removed from business by Madrigal Electromotive.
