What are functions in Data Studio?

In addition to being used for data visualization, tools like Google Data Studio also allow you to calculate and manipulate data from your data sources. In this post, we show you the functions in Data Studio, one of the functions you have to calculate and edit the data you have at your disposal.

What are functions in Data Studio?

In basic terms, functions in Data Studio are elements that allow you to manipulate data more easily.

The functions in Data Studio, along with the calculated fieldsare the vital center of the tool, as they allow you to analyze the data and add new metrics to the reports.

Calculated fields and functions in Data Studio are used to transform the dimensions and metrics that matter through your data sources, allowing you to create more detailed reports with the necessary information you want to display.

Google Data Studio offers you more than 50 functions that you can use within the calculated fields in formula formin order to make these fields even more powerful.

Some of the functions that you have at your disposal in Google Data Studio are:

Aggregation functions. Arithmetic functions. Date functions. Geo Functions or geographic functions. Text functions. Various functions.

These are the general categories of functions that you have at your disposal, each one has specific functions that allow you to reach the results that interest you.

Calculated fields and functions

Functions in Data Studio require calculated fields in order to function, as it is in these fields where you must specify the type of functions you want to be carried out. In order to create functions in Data Studio, the first thing you need to do is a field. For this you must go to resources>manage added data sources.

Once you open the tool, you must click edit. When you enter this panel, you will find the option to add fields in the upper right.

This is where you need to implement the formulas.

You must make sure that the formulas are written correctly. For this you can go to the lower panel, where they will appear green if the formulas are done correctly. If you have it incorrectly, the tool will tell you where the error is.

In that case, you will have to correct the error. Once you have your formula created, you just have to save it and the field will be created.

Most used formulas

There are some formulas that are worth knowing by heart, such as:

Group

The first formula you can find is group. These functions in Data Studio allow you to add similar pages under the same group and analyze them under the same dimension.

Payment channels

To evaluate the performance of a marketing strategy you can use groupings to identify how the organic and paid channels are performing. For this you can use CASE WHEN in any of the calculated fields in Data Studio.

Funnels

Another thing you can do with CASE WHEN is see the behavior of users when making final payments. You can see the number of products that users added and the products they purchased.
