The culinary art that surrounds the typical Mexican sweet shop is supported by the use of various foods, such as tropical fruits or nuts, which give life to exquisite desserts.

One of the most characteristic ingredients of the Veracruz confectionery is vanilla, since it originates from Mexico, as well as different types of corn.

Some typical Veracruz sweets

1. Dulce de leche from Tlacotalpán

The famous Tlacotalpán milk sweets are among the most characteristic of the state of Veracruz.

For its manufacture you only need milk and sugar. These ingredients are placed in a saucepan and boiled over very low heat until thick.

Then it is removed from the heat and continues to move until it forms a uniform mass. Finally, it is divided and the desired figures are made.

This mass can have variants by adding fruits such as coconut, strawberries, lemon or nuts, such as almonds or peanuts.

2. The cocada

This sweet present throughout the Veracruz entity is of Spanish origin, with an appearance similar to a nest.

For its preparation, grated coconut pulp, sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks and milk are used. Put the milk with the sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil over low heat.

Then the coconut is added, stirring the mixture until it is cooked, the yolks previously beaten with the cornstarch and a little water are added. Leave it on the fire for a few minutes, stirring constantly, then turn it off, let it rest and shape it as desired. Generally, small balls are presented.

3. Rice pudding

This sweet is an important part of the childhood of many Veracruzans. It is a sweet with a texture and aroma that is difficult to match, also of Spanish origin.

For its preparation you need whole milk, sugar, round rice, cinnamon sticks and powder to decorate, and lemon peel.

Place the milk, sugar, cinnamon stick and lemon in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. When it boils, add the rice and let it cook, stirring until the grain is tender.

4. Sweet fatties

A typical sweet that also provides a high nutritional value. Made with carrot, beetroot, orange, cornmeal, sugar, oil and water.

Place the carrot and beetroot, peeled and chopped, the orange juice and the water in the blender, blend well and add the sugar. This mixture is added little by little over the flour, until a thick consistency is achieved.

Finally, oil is placed in a pan and balls of dough are placed, without letting them cook too much.

5. Alfajores from Veracruz

It is a delicious sweet and highly sought after by both locals and tourists. To make it, you only need white corn, panela and cinnamon. The corn is roasted on a clay griddle, ground and set aside.

On the other hand, the panela honey is melted and the cinnamon is added. To this is added to the pulverized corn, until it forms a smooth paste that will later be spread and cut in the shape of a diamond.

It is baked for a few minutes and then it can be filled with dulce de leche and grated coconut around it.

6. Corn cake

It is a corn cake that is made throughout the country, but in Veracruz it is widely consumed. It has milk cream, sugar, corn kernels, eggs and baking powder. Blend everything and bake.

7. Black sapote with orange

It is a very colorful sweet thanks to the dark color of the pulp of this fruit. It has orange juice, sugar and some rum, which is blended and placed in the fridge.

8. Purple atole

It is a pre-Hispanic sweet that is made with a type of purple corn that is grown on the coast of Veracruz, in the Totonac region.
