Research sheet: what it is, parts, types, how to do it, examples

What is a research sheet?

A research sheet It is a format used to record the notes and data referring to a specific study. This is considered a fundamental element in any investigation, since it helps to preserve the information collected.

Within this type of files, all the data that will be later developed in the content of the investigation is entered. That is, this format involves the elements to be investigated, such as the topic, content, authors, etc.

Thanks to the research sheets, whoever carries out the study can classify the information contained therein much easier to be used later. In other words, through this format, the researcher can organize the notes that make up the study.

It can be said that these files are a fundamental element in any type of investigation, since without them, there would be no support for the information and topics that will later be used and developed in the study.

Parts of the investigation sheet

Within the large number of existing bibliographic records, it is important to know what their parts and elements are. This will make it easier to know which file is being used for the investigation.

Theme: refers to the argument or plot that the investigation will have. This is the one that basically defines what is going to be studied or explored.
Subtopic: This element refers to those parts of the research that complement the topic. In other words, they are secondary issues that will be equally developed in the research, but are not the central axis of it.
Author and date of publication: this section mentions who or who are the authors of the research. Likewise, the date of its publication is indicated.
Content: it is a summary or synthesis of the research, highlighting the most relevant ideas. Additionally, important conclusions or concepts that must be taken into account are recorded.
Sources: this is one of the most important elements within the investigative files, since they indicate the sources consulted and where the information used came from.
Type of file: this section indicates what type of file was made, thus facilitating a better understanding of the concepts developed within the investigation.
Post Location and Tab Number: This element refers to where the full investigation can be found and what tab it is. That is, where it is published.

How to make a research sheet

Despite the fact that the cards do not have a unique and definitive form, since each researcher builds it according to their requirements, there are some established steps to give order and structure to their construction.

As mentioned before, it is essential that the card has a topic to be covered. This is why, first of all, it must be registered within the format.
The subject must go in the upper margin and immediately below the names and surnames of the author, where the surnames will go before the name in capital letters, followed by the name in lowercase.
Subsequently, a clear and concise synthesis of the subject investigated must be made, detailing its ideas and concepts very well. Likewise, it should be indicated in which sections of the investigation can be found developed.
Once the summary of the investigated topic has been drafted, all the sources that were used in the study must be stated, indicating authors, place of the same, references, among other elements that help whoever reads the file to verify these sources.
Finally, it must be indicated where the research is published, along with the data and instructions on how to find it. Likewise, the number of the card is indicated.

Types of investigative dates

Being clear about the parts of these tokens and how they are built, it is important to know what their types are and how they are configured.

Textual: is that file where the researcher transcribes verbatim the relevant events that are part of the investigation. Said information does not have modifications or changes, but is described as it is, and the text is enclosed in quotation marks.
Summary: This file contains the most relevant data on the subject investigated in a synthesized manner. Although the investigative file as such contains a synopsis of the investigation, the summary type is much more emphatic in this section.
Paraphrase: unlike the text file, the paraphrase file is characterized by the fact that its author writes its content in his own words.
Comment: it is the type of research file where the researcher presents opinions or personal points of view. This is done in order to further enrich the research, since its content is complemented with the author’s own ideas.
Experience: these records are the ones that include lessons or situations that the researcher experienced to develop his study within their data.
Isolated data: this kind of file points out some particular concepts or ideas within the investigation. That is, it emphasizes certain elements of the investigation that may become more relevant within it.
Combined: they are those cards that involve both elements of a textual one, as well as a summary or paraphrase. In other words, it is the one that makes use of unmodified concepts, such as the researcher’s own ideas.
