Then all you have to do is rub the cloth under warm running water and rinse. Finally, wash by hand or machine.
A vinegar water bath
Is there any trace of mascara? Close the faucet of your basin or sink and run the equivalent of a liter of water. Pour 25 cl of homemade vinegar.
Then submerge your stained clothing in this vinegar water bath. Let soak for 30 minutes. Rub vigorously so that the product penetrates the heart of the fibers and then rinse.
Then wash your clothes by hand or machine. When the cycle is finished, the mascara stain will be completely gone!
half a lemon and salt
Is your mascara stain stubborn or only a few days old? A few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of salt is the effective recipe you need.
Your old stains will not resist the stain-removing action of lemon combined with the absorbent power of sodium chloride. To do this, cover the stain with salt.
Then squeeze the juice of half a lemon and pour it over the area to be treated. Then gently rub the cloth with a rag until the mascara stain is completely gone. To finish, wash the cloth by hand or machine.
Grandma’s recipes
Beware of the myths of grandmother’s recipes. Contrary to popular belief, using a makeup remover to remove embedded makeup from fabric is not recommended.
Most makeup removers contain oils or greasy substances. So you risk making the problem worse. The stain can spread and penetrate further into the fibers of the fabric.
Earth Sommières may be successful in removing some of the stain.
It is a type of clay with a very absorbent power, which has the ability to retain fat particles.
Sprinkle generously on the stain and leave to act for several hours before removing the excess with a soft, damp brush.
If you don’t have Terre de Sommières, you can use white clay, talcum powder, or even flour.
This is even less effective because these solutions only remove the oily part of the stain but not the color pigments.
White spirit, often used to remove felt, pencil or paint stains, can slightly reduce a make-up pencil stain, but the results are only partial and unsatisfactory.
Recipes to avoid:
The use of hydrogen peroxide or bleach is not recommended. These products are aggressive and ineffective on makeup stains. Bleach can permanently discolor colored fabrics. Ammonia should also be avoided on certain fabrics because this product can damage the fibers. It is often wise to clean a mascara stain with white vinegar or lemon juice. In reality, this trick rarely works. Black or colored pigments, especially waterproof mascaras, are stubborn and require more thorough treatment. Some blogs recommend using an iron with talc to activate the absorption of makeup stains, especially oily ones. However, this «trick» can permanently embed the stain in certain fabrics, due to the heat input.
