How to Convert HEIC and HEVC Files Quickly | updated 2022

Convert HEIC and HEVC files

HEIC photos and HEVC videos are becoming more and more popular, to the point of being the basic format of the iPhone. However, not all services are supported, here is how to convert these photos to JPG, PNG or video to H.264 on Windows 10.

In the world of photography and video, two file formats have made a name for themselves in recent years: HEIC (or HEIF) and HEVC (or H.265).

With the advantage of being much lighter than their more familiar counterparts such as JPG or PNG for images and H.264 for videos, they are becoming so popular that they are the basic format for photos and videos on the iPhone.

Unfortunately, not all devices are as exemplary as Apple products in terms of compatibility. Windows is still struggling to be 100% compatible – while MacOS has been supported since late 2017 – and Android only natively supports these formats since version 9.0 Pie. On top of that, some services just can’t open these files like Twitter.

Therefore, it is interesting to be able to convert these types of files, there are several tools available in Windows 10 to do it.

Convert HEIC or HEIF to JPEG or PNG

HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format, its file extension is .HEIC.

Some services still do not support this format, converting it to JPEG or PNG can sometimes be essential to use it without any problem.

There are several techniques to do the conversion, but one seems to us the most practical: the use of software.

The one we are going to use is called iMazing HEIC Converter, it is a free service that allows you to convert HEIC files to different formats. Starts downloading and installing the software and then open it.

iMazing works in a very simple way: drag your HEIC files to the converter, choose the export quality of the image (0 to 100), select the format in which the image will be converted and finally click Convert to choose where to save the images.

So you end up with .JPG or .PNG files that will be readable on many more devices and services.

If you don’t want to bother installing software, it is possible to convert HEIC images from various web converters. A simple Google search allowed us to find the Heic to JPG converter that works great.

However, it is limited to 50 simultaneous conversions, so we should favor iMazing for converting a large library.

Convert HEVC to H.264

HEVC is a more particular format than HEIC. It doesn’t necessarily have an extension assigned to it, it often comes in .MP4 or .MKV.

Here, the important thing is the encoding: H.265. Sometimes it is not compatible with all services, but a software allows you to convert various types of videos, including this one: Handbrake.

totally of Open Source, the software is one of the most popular in the video converter category. It supports many file formats, including our famous H.265.

To start, download and install HandBrake and open it. The beginning of the manipulation is simple, you just have to drag the video file to convert it in the software.

For this test, we used an excerpt from the Big Buck Bunny short film in UHD H.265 with the extension .MP4.

Once there, the software will choose a preset that it considers to be the most efficient for this file. Start by checking that you have an .MP4 (or .M4V) file in the Summary tab and an H.264 codec on the Video tab.

If you are satisfied with the settings, you can start the conversion by clicking start code. When the conversion is complete (the conversion time depends on the length and quality of the video and the power of your computer), just go to the folder where the video was saved to check that everything went well. .

If you don’t notice any issues, you’re done and your video will finally be converted to H.264 format and will be compatible with most devices and services.

HEIC and HEVC are, as you can see, easily convertible. Little by little, the services will adapt and become compatible with these new formats that are destined to one day become the standard in the field of photography and video.

If you want to play HEIC images and HEVC videos directly from your Windows 10 computer without converting them, feel free to follow our dedicated tutorial.

Since iOS 11, Windows users may have some difficulty opening photos taken from their iPhones. In fact, Apple has changed the format, goodbye JPEG, hello HEIC. This photo format…
