Heat conduction: what it is, features, examples

What is heat conduction?

2. From a hot cup to our hands

When it’s cold, people drink hot drinks to keep warm. If the beverage container is held long enough, the holder’s hands will get a little warmer.

3. From the beach to our feet

Sediments on the beach absorb heat from the sun and this heat is transferred to our feet if we walk barefoot on the sand.

4. From hot compresses to muscles

Compresses (hot water bottles) are used to relax muscles. Heat is transferred from the pack to the skin and from there to the muscles.

5. From fire to metal tongs

When a barbecue is made, the instruments used to turn the meats are made of metal. When these tongs come in contact with the spits, heat transfer begins.

If the tongs remain in contact with the heat source for a long time, the skin of the person holding it could be injured.

6. From radiator to hand

Radiators are responsible for producing heat to heat houses. For this reason, the surface of these devices is often hot. If you place your hand on the radiator, heat will be transferred and you may even feel pain if the heat is excessive.

7. From hand to an ice cube

If an ice cube is placed on a person’s hand, heat will transfer from the skin to the cube, causing it to melt.

8. From a car engine to the hood

When a car engine is started, the hood heats up due to the transfer of heat generated by the engine’s operation.

9. From an iron to a T-shirt

The irons are heated to remove wrinkles in clothing. When the iron comes into contact with the fabric, heat begins to be transferred.

10. From the fire in the fireplace to a poker

The pokers used to move the pieces of wood in the fireplace are made of metal, which are good conductors of heat. If a poker is left in contact with the heat source in the fireplace, heat will transfer from the fireplace to the poker.

If the poker remains in contact with the fire long enough, the heat will be conducted along the entire length of the metal tool.

11. From a hand to a coin

Coins have a tendency to be cold, or at least colder than human skin. If a coin is held in the hand, heat will be transferred from the skin to the coin, causing it to become hot.

On a cold day, people can hug each other to keep each other warm. Heat is transferred from the individual with the higher temperature to the individual with the lower temperature.

If we hold a piece of chocolate for a long time, it will melt due to the heat that is transferred from the hand to it.

If we touch a flame with our skin uncovered (from a candle, from the kitchen, among others), the heat will be transferred from the fire to our skin, causing us to burn.

The stones absorb the heat of the sun. If we touch one that has been exposed to the sun for a long time, the heat will be transferred from it to our skin.

17. From light bulbs to our skin

Traditional light bulbs get hot when they are on. If we touch a burning one, the heat will be transferred from it to our skin, causing burning.

18. From drinks to ice

When ice is added to a drink, heat is transferred by conduction from the drink to the ice, causing the ice to thaw.

19. From a soup to a teaspoon

If a teaspoon is left in a plate of hot soup, heat is transferred from the liquid to the metal.

20. From the flame to the pot and from the pot to the water

When we boil water, heat is conducted from the flame to the pot that contains the water. From there, the heat is transferred to the water causing it to reach its boiling point.

21. On the mercury thermometer

Upon contact with a hot surface, heat is transferred to the mercury, and the mercury measures the temperature by moving up the glass tube.

When we bathe in a tub, the hot water transfers heat to our body, warming it up.

23. At a campfire

When we bring our hands close to the fire, the heat that is transmitted by the air warms our hands.

24. Warm cloths

Hot pads are used by beauty salons for various cosmetology treatments. The fabric, heated by steam or directly by hot water, transmits heat to the skin.

25. Thermal clothing

Thermal clothing absorbs heat from the skin and the environment, and at the same time transmits it to the body to warm it.
