Flag of Sucre (Colombia): history, description, meaning

The sucre flag, Colombia, is made up of two horizontal stripes of equal proportions. The upper one is green and the lower one white. It is the main official symbol of the department.

Sucre is one of the 32 Colombian departments. It is located north of Colombia, in the region of the Caribbean plain. It limits to the north and east with the department of Bolívar, to the south with Córdoba and Bolívar, and to the west with Córdoba and the Caribbean Sea.

The city of Sincelejo is its capital. The department was created in 1966 and is divided into 26 municipalities and 5 sub-regions. Its motto is «Justice and Peace».

History

The department of Sucre is founded on August 18, 1966. Through Law 47 of 1966, the Senate of the Republic debates the bill on the consolidation of this department.

That same year, said law was approved, by which the department of Sucre was created and organized. This was sanctioned by President Carlos Lleras Restrepo.

The first governor to administer this area was Julio Alejandro Hernández Salom.

The department of Sucre receives its name in commemoration of Antonio José de Sucre, hero of national independence.

However, it is not until 1974 that the flag of this department was adopted, as it is known today, by decree 376 of July 2 of the same year.

Meaning

Green

The color green is related to the earth. It symbolizes the gentle undulations and flat surfaces of this area that allow the exploitation of the territory.

In this department, livestock activity is of great importance. The economy is based on cattle, horses, pigs, rams and donkeys.

On the other hand, agriculture is also practiced. Products such as cassava, corn, plantain, rice, avocado, pineapple and cotton, among others, are sold.

The color green is associated with prosperity and symbolizes confidence in the future to come. It implies hope, abundance and friendship.

White

The white color mainly represents peace. This symbol reinforces the motto of «Justice and Peace» of the department.

Also, white embodies integrity, purity and nobility.

In the department’s anthem, the symbolisms and themes mentioned above are once again reinforced:
