The name was assigned in homage to General José María Córdova Muñoz, a hero of independence who had an outstanding participation in the libertarian process in Colombia.
History
The department of Córdoba was established in 1952. Before that date, the territory was an unpopulated, poor area with few resources. Previously, these lands had been part of the department of Bolívar.
With the consolidation of the department, the zone acquires regional autonomy and this causes a notable development.
The tricolor flag was designed by the Antioquian academic Abel Botero Arango, in the city of Bogotá.
In the memoirs of lawyer Remberto Burgos Puche, it is explained that before a meeting with the president at that time, General Rafael Urdaneta Arbeláez, Botero Arango asked his colleagues what the flag and shield of the new department would be like.
Botero received no response. In this way, he proceeded at that moment to outline both symbols.
The flag and the shield were adopted as departmental symbols through the ninth law of December 18, 1951.
This came into effect six months later. On Wednesday, June 18, 1952, the department of Córdoba was officially created.
The Cordoba tricolor flag was shown in the streets of Montería. This was chosen as the new capital of the department due to its central position in the territory. In addition, in 1952 it was the most prosperous city in the Sinú Valley area.
Meaning
Blue
The blue color symbolizes the bodies of water in the department. The territory has the Caribbean Sea that bathes its coasts and extensive valleys such as Sinú and San Jorge.
Blue represents all the space occupied by these elements. In addition, it represents the sky that covers the Cordovan territory. Heraldically, it means faith, mercy, justice, gentleness and loyalty to great ideals.
White
The white color is an emblem of peace, integrity, purity and nobility.
It also refers to the cotton that is produced on land in this department. There are extensive cotton plantations in the Sinú and San Jorge valleys.
Green
The color green is associated with the earth. It personifies the meadows and mountains of this area, as well as the plant and floral richness of the Córdoba area.
This color also represents faith and confidence in the near future. It implies hope, friendship and abundance.
