Exogenous processes: what they are, definition, characteristics, examples

What are exogenous processes?

The exogenous processes are those that occur on the earth’s surface, due to the interaction between the rocks of the crust, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the biosphere. Among the consequences of exogenous processes that can be observed are valleys, deltas or water deposits at the mouths of rivers and caves.

These geological processes can be both destructive as constructive. Among the phenomena that derive from them are sedimentation and erosion, both cause modifications in the terrestrial relief.

These types of processes are related to external agents such as the weather, the wind, the water, the waves or the glaciers, to mention a few examples. Typically, exogenous processes remove the surface levels, thus modifying the characteristics caused by endogenous processes.

The energy that causes these processes does not come from inside the earth, as in the case of endogenous processes, and one of its sources of energy is solar radiationwhich heats the terrestrial and aquatic surfaces and the elements that make up the atmosphere.

Characteristics of exogenous processes

Examples of exogenous processes

Rain: The impact of rain is considered an exogenous process, since it generates maturity in the particles of the soil mass, which leads them to move. When the soil is exposed, rainfall has a general disaggregation effect.
Erosion: wear of soils and rocks that leads to different processes on the earth’s surface. This phenomenon involves the movement and transport of material. It can be caused by water, ice, wind or thermal changes.
Sedimentation: deposit or sedimentation of materials transported by agents such as gravity, glaciers or wind, which come from erosion and weathering of rocks. It can result in something beneficial or harmful.

avalanches: phenomena produced by large masses of snow that come off, sliding down the slopes of the mountains. They happen due to the accumulation of snow and the combination of certain physical and meteorological factors.

Differences with endogenous processes

Endogenous processes occur inside the planetwhile the exogenous ones happen on the earth’s surface. In the case of endogenous processes, they generate changes on the surface, forming reliefs and, on the other hand, the exogenous ones wear away these reliefs and deposit eroded materials in different places.

Both processes complement each other and when interacting they maintain balance. The endogenous processes originate from the action of the internal energy of the Earth, on the other hand, the exogenous ones take place due to the external energy of the planet, produced by the interaction of atmospheric agents.

Both endogenous and exogenous processes are related to each other, since the characteristics caused by the endogenous ones are modified by exogenous forces. Often these forces eliminate or reduce inequalities that were caused by endogenous processes at the Earth’s surface.
