Excel formats

Excel formats are one of the most important categories of tools in this spreadsheet. These tools are found in the home section of the application, in the styles section, as you can see in the following image:

Types of formats

There are several types of formats for each of the requirements that we need to format with our data. The types of formats in Excel are:

Conditional format

Conditional formatting is the first option or tool you will find in this section. Conditional formats will allow you to apply rules or conditions to identify values within cells that meet a certain condition or rulethrough different colors.

Like other options, there are several tasks you can perform with conditional formatting, as you will see in the following image:

Format as table

As a second option within the set of styles, the format tool as a table appears. This tool will allow you to add a specific format (with a set of colors, sizes and other styles) to all your data tables. There are several options, as evidenced in the following image:

Cell styles

Finally, another of the tools for the set of styles that we find is the cell styles option, with which you can modify the format of each of the cells. You can modify the size of the titles, headings, thematic cells and the number format, among others.

Tasks in the conditional formatting option

Now, one of the most interesting tools in Excel formats is conditional formats, which has a series of options to format each of the cells.

The options that you have been able to see and their corresponding usefulness are:

Rules to highlight cells, which are options to establish criteria to which, if met, Excel will give a certain style. These can be to determine which number is the largest or what a text contains. The rules for higher or lower values will establish conditions for when one percentage of the numbers is lower or higher than another. Data bars, although less used, allow you to color a cell depending on the data it stores. Color scales analyze how the data is distributed and paint it in three colors. Below you can see an example of this, where the highest values are green, the lowest are red and the middle are yellow.

Create a new formatting rule

To create a new formatting rule you can select this option from the drop-down window of the styles section. Here you can find different applications to create the rule and apply the formatting to the selected cells.

One of the most used, for example, is to use a formula that determines the cells to apply the format, since it is an option that will allow you to customize based on your needs.
