What is a comparative review?

A comparative review is a tool used to critically compare and assess written content, audiovisual content or physical products, identifying their main characteristics, and finding relationships between them. These relationships are based on similarities and differences between what is analyzed.

Comparative reviews can analyze texts, movies, musical themes, paintings, physical products, among other alternatives. Likewise, a combination can be made, for example by comparing a film and a text. These combinations will always depend on the topic being addressed and the purpose one has in addressing it.

Being a review, it contains information regarding the authors, the theses or main ideas, the purposes of the papers, the description of the hypotheses raised and secondary or supporting ideas, and the objective and critical appreciation of what is proposed in each work. .

In terms of format, comparative reviews can be written, audio, or video. For example, a comparative review could be published on a blog, in a podcast, or in a video on social media.

Since the comparative reviews that are done in institutes, schools and universities are usually written, we will focus on them in this article.

Features of comparative reviews

A comparative review has several characteristics:

Compare two or more works that address the same topic, these can be audio, text, visual, audiovisual, among others.
Contains only main ideas.
Organize information on a topic.
It is objective and refrains from making value judgments (good or bad).
It requires a rigorous process of information analysis before proceeding to its review.
They are a tool for the reader to quickly know the content of a work, without the need to consume it in its entirety.

How to make a comparative review?

Step 1: Choose a theme

Usually, in the academic field, it is the teacher who tells the student what topic to address. Additionally, the teacher can indicate which pieces should be compared with each other by the student.

Step 2: iidentify the purpose of the review

It is important that the student is able to answer why they think they are being asked to write this type of review on a specific topic. This will help you understand what approach you should give to your work, based on the level of study in which you are.

Step 3:hask questions about the content

In order to review the most relevant information included in the written or audiovisual piece, the student must ask several questions before starting to read or view the piece, in such a way that they can be answered when coming into contact with it.

The idea here is to achieve a deep understanding of the appreciated content and not to miss any important information. These types of questions help the student to be attentive at all times while appreciating the content of the pieces that he must review.

Step 4:rcheck the parts

An objective and rigorous assessment of each piece must be made, identifying the main ideas and answering the questions previously raised.

It is important to keep in mind that this is a comparison review, so note should be taken about the same aspects contained in each piece, in order to find similarities and differences between them.

Step 5: tonalize the information collected

Check that the information taken from each text is complete and answer the questions raised in point 3.

Step 6: iidentify the points that will be compared

With all the information collected and the questions resolved, you should review what the points to compare in the review will be. Remember that the purpose of this type of review is to review how the same topic is approached in two different works.

The writing must be presented as a written journey, where the reader can be taken through the ideas in a coherent way, establishing relationships between the works analyzed.

It is recommended to start with a brief introduction that indicates which pieces are being compared, and which aspects of them will be addressed in the review. Subsequently, the main ideas of each work must be presented separately, it is recommended to take one paragraph per work.

In the following paragraphs, take up ideas from each work and point out the categories or points where there are similarities or differences. Finally, close the review with a critical appraisal that shows how both works address the same theme, giving the reader a tool to understand what to expect from each work.
