History

The classification of artistic productions has varied over the years and also depends on each culture. In the Middle Ages, for example, philosophy and geometry were considered art.

With the beginning of the use of the term «Fine Arts» it was assumed as valid that the purpose of artistic productions was merely aesthetic.

Throughout history, thinkers and philosophers are the ones in charge of defining and establishing the parameters that allow art to be classified.

Characteristics

Artistic productions do not have a specific function or role to fulfill. They may have a purely aesthetic purpose or allow the analysis of a period in history.

Artistic productions can be divided according to the type of technique used for their production. For example, pictorial works are those that include painting, drawing or illustration. At the literary level, artistic productions can be divided according to the genre in which it is written: poetry, narrative, essay, etc.

It is considered that an artistic production must have a high durability. This means that it has to be a work that lasts several generations.

The historical context in which the works are produced is important, since it allows us to understand what they represent and give them meaning.

Artistic productions are considered valuable works not so much for their economic value, but for their cultural importance, since they are elements that should not be easily repeatable or that set an important precedent in their area.

In addition, artistic productions have their own language to communicate their message. Artistic productions that have to do with paintings, sculptures, photography or literature communicate their messages visually. Music is transmitted thanks to hearing; while there are arts such as cinema or theater that are audiovisual.
