Analysis sheet: what it is, characteristics, parts and examples

What is an analysis sheet?

A analysis sheet It is a didactic instrument used to gather and organize the most important information from a source, such as a literary work. This type of cards forces the person to carry out a very detailed reading of a work, which in many cases facilitates the learning of new topics and helps to develop analytical thinking.

These instruments are very useful in bibliographic research, since they allow for the consistent organization of everything that is considered important or useful in a work. Later, the analysis sheet can be used as a source of summary information for an investigation.

Characteristics of the analysis sheets

They are used for any source of information

Analysis sheets are not only used to extract useful and important information from written works, such as literary productions. They are also useful for analyzing audiovisual productions of any kind.

From a movie, a song or a novel, to a newspaper article, a television series or a podcast, any source of information can be condensed into an analysis file.

They contain only relevant information

An analysis sheet condenses the most relevant information from the source into a few items. In this sense, it dispenses with any unnecessary or unimportant data to extract the essence of the original document or source.

They require a detailed analysis of the consulted source

In order to create the analysis sheet of a work, it is necessary to have read it in depth, or, failing that, to have observed or listened to it carefully. This is because all the details need to be analyzed for the token to be effective.

They allow you to organize information more efficiently

The information contained in an analysis sheet can be accessed more quickly and efficiently than the same information contained in the original work. This is because, in the tab, the information is condensed and organized following a well-defined structure.

Parts of an analysis sheet

The amount of information and the level of detail contained in an analysis sheet vary according to the type of information source on which it is based, and according to the level of detail that the person preparing it wants to give it.

That being said, every analysis sheet has a constant fundamental structure made up of the following parts:

Bibliographic and contextual information

The first part of the file is intended to clearly and unequivocally identify the work or source on which the file deals. This includes all relevant bibliographic information such as:

Type of source (literary production, podcast, video, etc.). Name of the work. Author (or producer and director, in the case of film productions). Publication date. original language. Country of origin. Socioeconomic and cultural context in which it was published.

Specific information on structure and elements that make up the work

Once the work has been identified and contextualized, a more detailed description is made of more specific aspects, such as:

Structure (number of chapters, subchapters and pages, in the case of written works, and duration, number of episodes, etc., in the case of audiovisual productions). Gender. Main theme or themes that it deals with. Setting of the work (time, place and sociocultural context in which the narrative or the topic it deals with is developed). The type of vocabulary used. List of main and minor characters. Narrator type.

Argument

The argument is the heart of the analysis. This section of the file tries to synthesize the entire work in a short text that explains the main theme, the relationship between the characters and the most relevant events in the story. It is basically about explaining the message that the author tries to convey through the work.

Conclusion or comments

This section provides a critical view of the work and the way in which the subject was treated in it. You can discuss any teaching that the work has left, as well as your personal opinion about it.
