100+ phrases of sadness

The sadness It is the emotion we feel when we lose something. It is one of the basic human emotions, along with joy, fear, anger, disgust and surprise. It usually expresses itself with crying, depression, lack of appetite and indifference towards the environment, and it invades us when we do not receive what we expect or when the circumstances of our lives are adverse.

The ancient Greeks called this emotion «melancholy», and for them it was a psychosomatic illness. For the first Christians, it was included in the deadly sins, because they thought that wallowing in sadness sickened the soul. It is born from the loss of something, from the frustration of a desire or from the existence of an evil in life, such as a disease.

Below is a list of phrases of sadness from great authors such as Carl Gustav Jung, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Jean-Jacques Rosseau, William Shakespeare, Seneca, Gabriel García Márquez, Dr. Seuss, Khalil Gibran and many more.
